Termite Mounds, Kimberley

Termite Mounds, Kimberley, Western Australia

Termite mounds belonging to the Spinifex Termite (Nasutitermes triodiae) are widespread and common throughout the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The termites contribute to enriching the soil by breaking down clay, grass and woody material, and bring nutrients to the surface from underground. Termites are eaten by spiders and ants, which in turn provide food for insect-eating lizards and birds. The Echidna also eats termites.
